Music has existed almost as long as the human race has. Well, probably not, but it’s been around for a pretty long time. From cavemen hitting stones to revolutionary protest songs that have altered history, music has been ever-present. As soon as I popped out of my mom, my parents played The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Sting, and Jimi Hendrix on repeat. By the age of three, I could play three instruments, and by the age of four I joined a band. Not true. But by the age of 16, I have dedicated a semester’s worth of work on music, have started to write and record my own, and have put in countless hours listening, playing and enjoying music.
For this ELI, I realized that I wanted to focus on three main aspects of becoming a musician - expanding on my songwriting capabilities, becoming familiar with professional and home based recording, and learning the actual process of becoming an independant musician (mixing, mastering, booking etc.). The last two goals would include more research than the first, but my excitement grew as I realized that my ELI would basically consist of lots of experimentation with my own music, and collaboration with other artists to better myself as an independant musician.
I feel that my destiny is to further explore the realm of music and create my own. Again, I’ve had this dream since I was a kid. Music has helped shaped my life, molded me as a person, and affects me more strongly than anything else. Why wouldn’t I want to share my experiences and love for music with others? Life, for me, isn’t complete without music. It’s something I hope to continue doing for as long as my withered, old hands will allow.
